the boulder

There was once a man who was very strong and kind. He tried to help others when he could and always stayed true to himself. One day he was walking down the road he travelled down every day and came across a huge boulder strewn across the path, blocking his way. He couldnt go any further. He didnt want to go back and he couldnt climb under it. There was no way he could climb over it, he was feeling so disturbed! He sat on the ground and wished it would go away. When he opened his eyes it was still there. He pushed it but it didnt move an inch. It was no use!! He waited for hours but nothing changed and he was getting mighty hungry. Just then a wise old man wandered past "what is the problem?" he asked. "There is a HUGE boulder blocking my way. It is way too big to climb over and I cant get under it or past it -there is NOTHING I can do." The wise man smiled and asked "have you tried stepping back and looking at it from every angle?" The man laughed and thought this was a stupid idea, but didnt want to offend the old man, so he tried it. When he stood back and really looked at the boulder he realised that it wasnt really that scary or big and it seemed to grow smaller and smaller the longer he assessed it. So he stood back, got a run up and jumped over it. It goes to prove that when we fear something we dont see it properly and cant get a proper analysis unless we stand back and really look at it. The results are sometimes astounding.

Today

Today I lived a different life. I woke up before the sun had even thought of glinting in my direction. There was a chill in the air, so I put on my sneakers and old tracksuit and went outside. I walked for hours - alongside bubbling streams, across arid deserts and over immense mountain ranges. With every step I felt like I was drawing nearer to my destiny. I felt no cold, no pain, no weariness and no hunger. I had submerged myself into myself and all thoughts had left me. There were no words. There was no world. Just me and this instinct. I never stopped, even for a second. The sun came and went and darkness greeted me once again, like an old friend. I found comfort in the familiarity. Then I stopped. I looked around and took in my bearings, finding myself at the shore of a vast ocean. The moon was full and it created such a lovely glow on the ripples. Before I could stop myself I started to smile. It reached every part of my body and even transmitted inside, creating brilliant rays of white light. This light shot out from me and melted into everything that I could see. A simple smile can have an amazing effect on the world around you.

And then I really woke up.

The tree books..

When I was younger I remember reading several wonderful books that opened up a new world to me (lucky for me I still sometimes discover these kind of books nowadays but there is nothing like the classics).

The main one I wanted to mention was 'The Faraway Tree'. Here is a synopsis. I think it used to scare me.

"The Faraway Tree series is a popular series of children's books written by Enid Blyton. The stories revolve around an enchanted wood where a gigantic magic tree grows, which is discovered by three children, living nearby. At the top of the tree is a ladder which leads the children to a magic land. It is a different place every time they visit, because the land can "move on" from the top of the tree and make way for a new land. The children are free to come and go, but they have to leave before the land "moves on" or they will be stuck there until the hole comes back and they can get down the ladder at the top of the tree."
They dont really make stories like that anymore. While we are on the topic of trees, another one I remember reading (maybe a little later) was 'The Giving Tree'. This one is more to make you think. Different people take it different ways. Synopsis.
"The story is a short moral tale about a relationship between a young boy and a tree in a forest. The tree and the boy become best friends. The tree always provides the boy with what he wants: branches to swing from, shade to sit under, apples to snack on, branches to build a house. As the boy grows older and older he requires more and more of the tree. The tree loves the boy very much and gives him anything he asks for. In the ultimate act of self-sacrifice, the tree lets the boy cut her down so the boy can build a boat in which he can sail. The boy leaves the tree, now a stump. Many years later, the boy, now an old man, returns and the tree says "I have nothing left to give you". The boy replies that all he needs is a quiet place to sit and rest. The tree happily obliges."
Anyone remember reading those? And we could analyse the tree's choices but we'll leave that for another day.

stop! story time..

Last night I went late night shopping at Southland with my peeps, and we arrived at the car park at about 6.30pm. It was insanely busy, so we had to drive all the way up to level 4 and still couldnt find a car spot. We drove around and around and each time someone pulled out the car infront of me got it. Or I happened to be in the wrong aisle. I ended up being one of those annoying cars that stop to the side and wait. We waited. No-one came to leave where we were. So then we drove around some more. I stopped in the middle aisle (dont think its technically called an aisle but meh) and watched the people coming out of the shopping centre. I tried to follow one but they went the wrong way. By this time its about 6.45pm. THEN a family of two girls, a mum and a grandma come out of the doors. They walk past me down the middle aisle, no-one is behind me so I reverse pretty much the whole way back. They walk about half way down and then start to go through to the other side! The girls point to the other aisle as if to say 'sorry, we are over there!'. I say "oh noooo!". Then the mum comes back and says "we will wait for you!!" I say "ooh thankyou sooo much!" and then we frantically drive into the other aisle, but not before a car passes me.

Eventually I get into the other aisle and the grandma is waiting near the car (cant see anyone else) so the car infront slows down. The grandma sees that its not me in the car so she goes back into the other aisle and the car slowly drives away. I stop in the same spot and they all come out and hop in the car and drive off.

How lovely!!!

stories

I think I have said before on here that "everyone has a story, but not everyone wants to hear it." The meaning of that statement is we all go through things, we all live our lives and experience different events and situations that, as well as changing us, often make good stories. I sometimes forget my good stories. I keep a lot of them locked away until the time is right. I'm not the type of person who tells strangers the stuff of my soul (though this blog somewhat changes that fact). Like a good book you have to read a few chapters before you get to the good indepth tales. So in that way sometimes people dont want to put in the effort and then they dont get the stories.

I sometimes forget just how much I have been through and how many interesting things that I have done. If you sit anyone down and spend time with them and ask them about their lives - it would be rare to find anyone without atleast a few interesting stories. You never know what the person you are talking to has been through. You dont know the events that shaped him, and you dont know the words that hurt her. You dont know what made him cry and what her ultimate passion is. And without that knowledge we cant honestly judge people. You dont know what they have been through. So, instead, we should cultivate an environment of sharing and appreciation. Maybe then the stories that have changed our lives for the better can change other peoples lives too.
